Had a blow out this afternoon, (ran over a piece of metal) limped home on the run flat the last half mile, according to discount tire, NTB, and Kauffman Tires websites nothing in stock in my size. Discount tire can have the Bridgestone’s I want by Wednesday but have no morning appointments until Thursday. So I’m screwed for the next few days. Hell even a donut spare could get me to the store for a couple of days. At least I’m working from home this week.

Thus why its a good idea to have at least one spare wheel some where, at home or in the car. Doesnt even have to be the same width as its just a spare

Yeah I just ordered a refurbished wheel from eBay.

Man I’m glad my BMW is old enough to have a full size spare tire well. I have a matching spare with a great tire, I’m oddly proud of it. Proud enough to take a picture:

Nice and like I said just slap a tire that’s close in size on it. I normally just put a used tire on the worst rim.

I miss those. My Jag had the same thing

That was one reason why I didn’t buy a 320i. I just cant stand the idea of driving without a spare. Just charge me the $300 or $400 for the stupid donut tire - but GIVE ME MY SPARE!

It is supposed to be here Wednesday I’ll just have them save the best old tire. It was tire time anyway I was going to replace them all next month.

I wonder why automakers switched away from having real spare tires? I guess they figured run-flats are “good enough” and not having a spare tire saves them a few bucks?

They put the battery where the tire used to go.

I know BMW did that starting with the E39 M5, but other BMWs of that era still had spare tires with the battery mounted at the side of the trunk.

Mines an F10 535i to be honest I didn’t even check when I bought it. It was low miles and in my price range had a stick shift and I drove it loved it and bought it. When I got home and was exploring the trunk I was surprised.

Thank god I have a full size matching spare, and they still found space for an 18 gallon fuel tank. Wizardry!

My E30 had it back there too with a red wire connected to ground and hot connecting to black. If you never have tried jumping a car and connect reverse voltages but it doesn’t work out very well. Luckily I noticed the smoke.

*spare car
You can never be too cautious. Maybe 2-3 if you have place to park them.

Yeaaa, my Cooper S came with runflats instead of a spare as well which made the ride unbearable. I ditched them within about a month of buying it and once I bought a second set of wheels I’ve kept a full size spare where the rear passenger seat should be.

It has a manual so all is forgiven!

Well that’s idiotic. Did they all come like that from the factory? Sounds more like a hack wiring job by a previous owner. All of my BMWs have the normal setup with red being hot and black being ground, and I’ve jumped several cars with all of my BMWs (and my Range Rover too).

I freely admit that I didn’t research things as much as I should have but I took a good double and triple take and that was how it was wired after I tried to light my trunk on fire. The battery terminals were oppo the leads and I only looked at the leads while putting the clamps on.
Somewhere out there, under a shady tree, is a man proud of replacing battery cables by himself.

Man, at that point you have to wonderful if it’s just innocent stupidity that led to that or some kind of malicious intent. Good thing you didn’t burn down your car!

Cost savings, and weight savings. As the government fuel economy requirements go up, every pound left off the car helps.
